Congrats on the good press for the book! I am fascinated by this article you write about. It does seem so modern--quite funny that even in 1964 people were doing in/out lists and making grand cultural pronouncements about what were, ultimately changes in fashion
It's weird, isn't it? It's such an obvious outgrowth of mass media, so of course it would've been something that grew out of the Magazine Era. (Though it might have happened earlier than that! There are probably 18th Century broadsheets that are dedicated to something like this.) As someone who breaks out in hives at the sight of a list, I usually overlook them, but in this case it was such an interesting prelude to two guys turning around and writing a great piece of art. It's cool!
Big congrats on all the great notices. My dad spent over two decades at Esquire, many of them as advertising manager and director, then becoming publisher after Gingrich stepped down. He confirmed many times that Benton and Newman were anything but assholes.
Yeah, I think just about everybody who's ever encountered Benton (and Newman, I would assume, but he's been gone a while) describes him as a lovely, lovely man. I'm using "assholes" here very, very loosely: only in the sense that almost all of us who are smart--or stupid!--enough to have creative ambitions in our youth are, sort of. But not for long, at least not if we're lucky

Great story, and somehow this is the first I’m hearing of your book! Looking forward to it.

All of the categorizing of Old vs. New Sentimentality seems to drain meaning from “Sentimentality” itself. Pre-ordered and can’t wait!
Really looking forward to the book! Say howdy to Tom for me.
